Jonathan’s paintings are of places that are very familiar to him – his walk to work, where he shops, and where he walks at weekends. He is trying to record a changing city, focusing on places and images that resonate with him. The abstract qualities of colour, line, form, space and pattern, and the emotional atmosphere of the painting, are as important to him as a convincing depiction of a real place.
Jonathan studied Fine Art at Falmouth in Cornwall and then moved to Leeds where he has lived and worked for twenty seven years. He paints in oil on canvas and on board, and also makes linocuts and woodcuts based on his paintings. He paint in a room at home, and makes his prints at the Leeds Print Workshop.
